Our mission is a simple one:
Every moment counts.
TREAT them with LAZY DOG.
TREAT them with LOVE!
It’s a well-known fact that our four-footed family members require a lot of snooze time. But did you know that they average 18 hours a day? If your dogs are anything like ours, this shouldn’t be too surprising. What is surprising is the quality of some of the food and treats available for our canine companions.
We believe your dog deserves better!
Our products are made with simple, beneficial ingredients that not only make them viciously delicious, but also naturally nutritious. All of our product recipes are free of wheat, corn, soy, egg and meat, with grain and dairy-free offerings. We never use any fillers, preservatives or anything artificial. When it comes down to it, our products "lick' the competition. They're just good, wholesome treats you can feel good about giving.
We guarantee that all of our products are freshly made from only the highest quality human grade ingredients, with the health and well being of your dog as our #1 concern. All of our products are licensed, independently tested and dog friendly and approved.
From Calling to Career
In 2001, I decided to combine my love for dogs with a simple recipe from my home oven to create The Lazy Dog Cookie Co. I started by giving peanut butter treats to friends and co-workers for their dogs. The response was amazing, so I decided to take space at an open-air farmers market in York, Pa. Keith and I were a little skeptical about setting up at 7:00 am on a Saturday to sell dog treats. However, the customers embraced our products. Slowly we added a few local markets and pet stores, but stayed focused on farmers markets and weekend festivals.
After a short two-year stay in Pittsburgh, PA, we moved to Grand Rapids, MI. In 2004, I decided to exhibit at our first pet product industry tradeshow. It was the first time I saw what Lazy Dog could become, I realized this could be my career.
Our stay in Grand Rapids was short. After only 18 months we had an opportunity to move closer to home and settled in Saratoga Springs, NY. For the third time in less than six years I set up my bakery - in the garage - and kept spreading the word about the benefits of wheat-free treats for dogs.
Only one short year after relocating to Saratoga Springs, Keith and I decided to take a leap of faith and focus our combined efforts on Lazy Dog. Keith resigned his Corporate Sales position with Heinz Ketchup and joined me full time.
I have to say, our family and friends thought we were crazy. Leaving your job to sell dog treats? Who ever heard of such a thing! We went ahead with our plan and after one year,we moved out of the garage into our first real bakery in Ballston Spa, NY. Around the same time a local business owner introduced us to the Saratoga Bridges organization. Saratoga Bridges is the area’s premier community resource for people with disabilities and their families. We started sending small projects to the Saratoga Bridges workshop, but had no idea how this relationship would develop.
After a couple of years of having Saratoga Bridges package small projects for Lazy Dog, we wanted to do more. So we asked the organization to allow a group of 6-8 individuals and a supervisor to leave the Saratoga Bridges workshop and work at Lazy Dog. After a few months of discussion, we finally worked out the details and started a whole new endeavor. For the past five years, the Saratoga Bridges group have worked at Lazy Dog twice a week. We truly would not be able to accomplish everything we accomplish without their help. More importantly, we have seen the individuals in the group flourish. Their personalities have come out, and they have a real sense of pride about the work they do.
Giving Back to Animals in Need
Helping animals in need is one of the main reasons I started Lazy Dog. We support all animals, domestic, farm animals and wildlife. I’ve been known to run out in traffic to save an injured squirrel, rabbit, bird or opossum.
Presently we support the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, Animal Protective Foundation and Homes for Orphaned Pets Exist by donating treats. Every family that adopts a new dog takes home some Lazy Dog treats. Sometimes, free treats are all it takes to help a dog find a forever home.
In 2014, we launched a new campaign to help support animal welfare organizations by contributing 5% of sales on our 6” hand-cut peanut butter bone to animal welfare organizations across the country. Lazy Dog plans to expand the product offering under the Buy a Bone Help Give a Dog a Home campaign allowing larger and more frequent contributions.
We know every moment counts. Treat them with Lazy Dog. Treat them with Love.
